UX writing: small words, enormous difference

Button labels, empty states, error messages. The tiny copy that decides whether a product feels effortless or exhausting.

UX writing: small words, enormous difference

The best interface copy disappears. Nobody notices it, because nobody had to stop and think. That invisibility is the entire craft of UX writing.

Three habits carry most of the weight. First, verbs over nouns — 'Send invite' beats 'Invitation'. Second, specificity over politeness — 'We could not find that email' beats 'Something went wrong'. Third, one voice throughout — a friendly onboarding followed by a corporate error message reads as two different products.

Test your microcopy the same way you test flows. Read it aloud. Show it to someone outside the team. Cut every word that does not earn its place. If a screen still works after you delete a sentence, delete it.

Great UX writing does not decorate a product. It quietly holds it together.
